Quicker athletes

To help the athlete become quicker the S.P.E.E.D. Lite program focuses on developing speed, strength, and reaction.

To develop speed S.P.E.E.D. Lite focuses on agility, by improving mobility through increased flexibility and functional strength. Much of this is achieved by developing neurological pathways in teaching the athlete techniques that will achieve the required results. This is done in such a way as to reduce the risk of injury while participating in sports.

Strength is the base of all top sports performances. There need to be certain movement knowledge in place for an athlete to start with resistance training in order to reduce the chances of injury. The S.P.E.E.D. Lite program focuses on developing the correct neurological pathways for these basic movements so as to provide the athlete an easier transition to resistance training when it becomes required.

Ultimate Coaching does not believe in quick fixes. Any young athlete that is exposed to stimuli (any type of exercise) will improve his/her performance. However, the long term effects of training is what the S.P.E.E.D. Lite program focuses on. Young athletes’ bodies change a lot in their teens which influences their capabilities even more. Ie, boys receive higher levels of testosterone which increases strength without any exercise. Girls’ body shape changes which leads to certain strength deficits occurring as well as increased chances of certain types of injuries. This is why there are no promises as to how much the athletes’ capabilities will improve. Ultimate Coaching believes that because of these factors, the type of exercises used and the way the S.P.E.E.D. Lite program is designed become a much bigger issue and should therefore be given a higher priority than just the actual improvement of the athlete.

The ABC’s

The S.P.E.E.D. Lite program improves the individual athlete’s ABC’s (Agility, balance, coordination and speed). A lot of time is spent on developing the foundations. In order to build a stronger house the foundations needs to be well laid.

Multi-directional Speed

Extremely good multi-directional speed is required to be faster, especially on a sports field.

For improved multi-directional speed

the athlete needs to develop better mobility.

To improve your mobility you need to improve your flexibility and functional strength.

The S.PE.E.D. Lite program focuses on developing all these skills so as to improve the range of controlled motion (mobility).

Long term

Programming of the exercises is built around the principles of the Long Term Athlete Development (LTAD) system.

This system has been developed by Istvan Balyi from coaching systems used in Eastern Europe during the 50’s and 60’s. This system is used by most of the top sporting countries in the world, e.g. Australia, China, Russia, UK, etc. The S.P.E.E.D. Lite program focuses on the FUNdamental, Learn to Train and Train to Train stages of development.
